Information Systems/Technology and Patient Care Technology for the Improvement and Transformation of Health Care

Experimental Design Study Critique - I have chosen to use this exemplar because it aligns with the use of technology to improve access to quality care. The original research investigation chosen for this experimental design study critique is entitled, “Telehealth vs In-Person Early Palliative Care for Patients with Advanced Lung Cancer: A Multisite Randomized Clinical Trial” by Greer, et. al., which was published this month in JAMA (2024). The study evaluated the provision of palliative care provided in-person vs. telehealth for people living with advanced lung cancer and its’ effect on patient and caregiver quality of life, patient coping, patient and caregiver satisfaction, mood, and prognostic perceptions. Findings support equivalent effects on quality of life between in-person and telehealth groups supporting telehealth as a mechanism by which the reach of palliative care may be expanded moving forward.

Project Proposal - I have chosen to use this exemplar because it aligns with the use of technology to improve the identification of patients with a poor prognosis. In this paper, three studies found that the use of machine learning prognostic tools were useful in identifying patients at high risk for mortality, which was foundational to my quality improvement project.
